The Churches of Britain and Ireland
Wingate, County Durham
Old maps mark a Bible Christian Chapel, at NZ 3986 3725. The Streetview van hasn't passed its site, and I haven't been able to find a photo on-line. Aerial views suggest it hasn't survived. Holy Trinity (1840-1). Another view, following the demolition of the vestry. NZ 4000 3715. Both © Bill Henderson. Two additional views - 1, 2, and an interior, all © Norman Cummings (2015). Link. Grade II listed. Two Methodist Chapels stood fairly close to each other, just south of the (now gone) railway line. A Primitive Methodist Chapel on Church Street at NZ 4054 3656, and another labelled as U.M. Ch. on Front Street and the corner of the now-vanished Acclom Street at NZ 4058 3649. Part of the P.M. seems to have survived - 2023 Streetview, the other chapel has gone - site (2023 Streetview). Milbank Methodist Church on Milbank Terrace, as seen by Streetview in 2023. This source dates it to 1903-4, as Primitive Methodist. NZ 4063 3633. Link. Older O.S. maps mark a Primitive Methodist Chapel south of Holy Trinity at NZ 4003 3702. Its site can be seen here, on a Streetview of 2008 - the house on the site of the chapel stands to the left of a garden where its Sunday School used to be. A My Primitive Methodists entry (which includes a photo), dates a P.M. chapel in Wingate to 1897, replacing an earlier one on Humble Lane. Whether it was this chapel, or the one mentioned above (see Two Methodist Chapels) is unclear. Humble Lane seems to have gone, and so presumably has the old chapel. The 25" O.S. map of 1897 shows Salvation Army Temple, somewhere near where Front Street becomes Station Road. Unfortunately it isn't clear which building is intended, nor is it evident from Streetviews that anything of it survives. It would have stood somewhere on the left side of the road seen in a Streetview from 2023. My best guess from the size of buildings shown on the map is that it might have been one at NZ 4035 3675 - site here (2023 Streetview).
