Stanley and Stanley Ferry, West Yorkshire

Stanley on Wikipedia.

Bottomboat Primitive Methodist Chapel on Bottomboat Lane was destroyed in a fire before 2008 when Streetview saw the vacant site. It was already derelict by 1990 as a photo shows here, where it's dated to 1874. A Sunday School was added later, set further back from the road. Housing has since been built on both sites - 2023 Streetview. SE 3595 2469.

Lee Mount Wesleyan Chapel (built 1874-6, SE 3471 2458) on Mount Road was demolished because of subsidence. A photo of it can be seen on this pdf document (see p. 256), where its closure is given as 1968, demolition circa 1976. A bungalow was built on its site - it can be seen in a 2023 Streetview, with its former Sunday School of 1929, latterly Stanley Methodist Church, standing adjacent. It too has now closed. It can also be seen here, © David Regan (2013). SE 3480 2457.

St. Peter on Aberford Road. Unused since 2001 because of structural problems. SE 3495 2423. © Bill Henderson. There were proposals to redevelop the church for housing, but in the end it was demolished in 2014 - despite this its grade II listing is still available, wherein it's dated to 1821-4, largely re-built 1911-13. Streetviews in 2011, 2012 and 2016. The congregation now meet in the Church Centre (a former school) on Lake Lock Road. SE 3496 2444. © David Regan (2013). Link.

Stanley Lane Ends Primitive Methodist Chapel (1874) on Long Causeway and Chapel Street was closed in the 1970's and demolished in the 1980's. Although previously listed here as dating from 1874 (from an on-line source no longer available), it's dated here to 1839. Its site was seen by Streetview in 2023. SE 3451 2433.

The former United Free Methodist Chapel of 1881 on Ferry Lane, now converted into flats. Another view. SE 3470 2297. Both © David Regan (2013). What was its presumed predecessor, also U.F.M., stood only a short distance further along the same lane at SE 3463 2302. Old maps show it was used as a Sunday School into the 1940's at least, but it was demolished at some point, and its site (garages plus part of the bungalow) was seen by Streetview in 2024.

The former Village Institute on Aberford Road was for some time used as a Roman Catholic Chapel. SE 3526 2458. © David Regan (2013).

Zion Christian Centre on Aberford Road was previously Congregational, dating from 1876. SE 3530 2457. © Bill Henderson. Link.
