The Abbey, properly the Abbey Church of St. Mary the Virgin. ST 6381 1650. © Bill McKenzie. Interior view, from an old postcard in Christopher Skottowe's Collection. And from the same collection, an old engraving of the Abbey. It's interesting to compare the engraving with this modern view, © Steve Bulman (2010). Three interior views- 1, 2, 3, the superb painted fan-vaulted roof, and a monument, all © Steve Bulman (2010). As you look at the altar, the right-hand aisle has a coin operated machine for lighting the roof. Well worth the tiny investment! Another view, © Christopher Skottowe (1978). Another view, two additional interior views - 1, 2, the Digby Monument, and a stained glass window, all Christopher Skottowe (2010). Link. Grade I listed. Cheap Street Church (Methodist and U.R.C.). ST 6381 1662. © Andrew Ross. Link. The My Primitive Methodists website has an entry for a P.M. Chapel of 1832 on Acreman Street, but doesn't have an exact location, saying that there isn't a chapel marked on 19th century O.S. maps. However, the 25" map of 1903 (but not the 6" map of 1903!) has the word Chap. printed over the junction where Acreman Street becomes Lower Acreman Street. Unfortunately the intended building isn't indicated, but looking at Streetview for the buildings around the junction, all look old. But there is an area of grass where buildings used to be, so this is probably where the chapel once stood. Whether it was the Primitive Methodist Chapel is of course speculative. The site was seen by Streetview in 2009. The grid reference (ST 6371 1636) is for the proposed chapel site. My appreciation to Henry More for confirming that my speculations were correct - the chapel stood where the grassed area is today, and extended onto what is now the roadway. It had ceased to be used as a chapel no later than the late 1950's, at which time it was in use as a carpenter's workshop. Sacred Heart and St. Aldhelm (R.C.) on Westbury, and as seen by Streetview in 2018. ST 6371 1617. Link. St. Cuthbert Old Chancel stands east of the town on London Road at ST 6535 1783. It was seen by Streetview in 2021. St. Mary Magdalene on Castleton Road, Castleton. It was seen (though hampered by vegetation) by Streetview in 2011. ST 6463 1681. It's dated here (follow the link to the church) to 1714-15, on the site of two earlier churches. Grade II* listed. The former Union Chapel (1803) on Long Street, now an auction house. © Steve Bulman (2010). Previously listed as a possible former(?) church, Janet Gimber has advised that this was the school attached to the Union Chapel (Congregational), which is just behind it (see below). © Steve Bulman (2010).
