The Churches of Britain and Ireland
Saltash, Cornwall
Baptist Church on Culver Road. Though evidently of fairly recent construction, O.S. maps show that it stands on the site of an earlier chapel or chapels, in place by no later than 1888. SX 4304 5867. © Paul E. Barnett (2018). Link. Most O.S. maps show an otherwise unidentified Chapel on Fore Street and Wesley Road. However, it does show on a map of 1894 as Wesleyan, so will have been the predecessor of the Wesley Methodist Church listed below, as mentioned on their history page. SX 4280 5888. A 6" map of 1908 shows a Mission Hall on the waterfront at SX 4330 5869. It must have been fairly short-lived, as earlier and later maps don't show it. The building on the site today was seen by Streetview in 2022. Our Lady of The Angels (R.C.) on Bishop's Close, as seen by Streetview in 2022. SX 4225 5930. Link. Redeemer Church meets at The Core Youth & Community Centre off Church Road. Not seen by Streetview, a photo of it can be seen here. SX 4196 5865. Link. A mid-20th century map shows a place of worship on Lower Port View. What is presumably the same building is labelled on earlier maps (though not as a place of worship) as St. Francis' Friary. SX 4266 5865. Difficult to see on Streetview because of trees, I think it's this building, seen in 2022. I've been unable to find any on-line references to it. St. Nicholas and St. Faith on Fore Street. SX 4311 5882. © Andrew Ross. Link. Grade I listed. The adjacent war memorial is also listed, as grade II. St. Stephen, on St. Stephen's Road. Originally outside the town, urban spread means it now stands within its boundaries. SX 4170 5834. © James Murray. Link. Grade I listed. For listed features associated with the church see here. Saltash Gospel Hall (2022 Streetview) stands on Liskeard Road and Moorlands Lane, Burraton, at SX 4127 5945. It stands on the site of a smaller Plymouth Brethren Chapel, shown on O.S. maps from the late 19th century. Saltash Wesley Methodist Church on Callington Road and Glebe Avenue. SX 4258 5898. © James Murray. Another view, © Paul E. Barnett (2022). Link. Burraton Methodist Church as seen by Streetview in 2022. SX 4106 5944. The part nearest to the camera is (or stands on the site of) a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel which old maps show had been built by 1896. Link.
