The Churches of Britain and Ireland
Rochford, Essex On the 25" O.S. map of 1897, just a little way south of the Methodist, is shown Chapel (Peculiar People), a denomination I've never seen before. This source explains that the Peculiar People was a small sect confined to Essex. It seems to be the same building as shown on an 1880 map as Chapel (Christian Brethren). Out of use (and it seems to have been demolished) before 1954, it stood set back from the road in the open area seen in a Streetview from 2024. TQ 8759 9069. There's a still active Congregational Church (2024 Streetview) on North Street at TQ 8767 9061. Pre-dating a map of 1897, the building seems to be shown but not labelled on one of 1880. Link. Mid-20th century maps show a place of worship on Rocheway at TQ 8801 9060. It will have been the Evangelical Church mentioned on Genuki. Its site was seen by Streetview in 2024. The Methodist Church (2024 Streetview) is on North Street, and labelled on older maps as Wesleyan. It's dated here to 1841, successor to a chapel of 1822 on Market Alley, which I haven't been able to locate, but was probably near to the present Market Square on West Street. TQ 8760 9076. Link. St. Andrew. Three more views - 1, 2, 3. TQ 8718 9028. All © Karel Kuča (2024). Link. Grade II* listed. See here for related listed features. St Teresa of the Child Jesus (R.C.) is on Ashingdon Road. Genuki calls it St. Teresa of Lisieux. The town Wikipedia entry dates it to 1977, though the congregation is older. Completely hidden on Streetview by foliage, a small photo can be seen here. TQ 8705 9112. Link. Rochford Workhouse had a Chapel, at TQ 8748 9066. It can't be seen on Streetview, and I don't know if it has survived, but a photo can be seen here, where it's dated to circa 1865, and it also shows a photo of the "board-room block", converted to another chapel in the 1920's. It says that most of the buildings were demolished in the 1990's. Mid-20th century maps also show a place of worship on Ashingdon Road, near it junction with Dalys Road, at TQ 8715 9093. All Streetviews are hampered by vegetation - the best is one from 2019. I've been unable to discover what it was - can you advise?
