The Churches of Britain and Ireland
Ilkley, West Yorkshire
All Saints mostly dates from a re-build of 1860. SE 117 478. From an old postcard (franked 1908), in Steve Bulman's Collection. A modern view, and an interior view, both © Stan Walker. Another view, © Stuart Mackrell. Link. Grade II* listed. For related listed features see here. The Baptist Church is on Kings Road. SE 1126 4767. © David Regan (2025). Link - dates it to 1899. Ben Rhydding Methodist Church on Wheatley Lane and Ben Rhydding Road. SE 1342 4758. © David Regan (2013). Link. An earlier church shows on older maps a few yards further to the east, as Wesleyan. A 2024 Streetview shows the church at the right, and what I take to be the church hall to the left. This is, or is on the site of, the earlier church. Christchurch (Methodist and U.R.C.) on The Grove Promenade and Riddings Road was originally Congregational, of 1868. SE 1162 4759. © Alan Blacklock. Another view, © Stuart Mackrell. Link. Older O.S. maps mark a Congregational Hall on Dean Street at SE 1227 4804. It seem quite a distance from Christchurch, but may have been their church hall. None of the available maps mark it as a place of worship, but you may know better! Its site was photographed by © David Regan in 2025. The Octagon on Wells Road and Whitton Croft Road is a former First Church of Christ, Scientist Church. It's dated here to 1941. SE 1177 4754. © David Regan (2025). The Friends Meeting House is on Queens Road. SE 1165 4732. © David Regan (2025). Link - dates it to 1869. The cemetery on Cemetery Road has two former Mortuary Chapels - in this photo, left (southernmost) CoE, SE 1227 4831 (now Yoga Chapel), right Nonconformist, SE 1228 4833. Both are dated in their grade II listings to circa 1880 - CoE, Nonconformist. © David Regan (2025). The Old Wesleyan Chapel stands at the junction of Skipton Road and Bolton Bridge Road. It has a blue plaque which dates it to 1834-69. It was the predecessor of what is now Christchurch. SE 1134 4779. © Steve Bulman (2022). Link. It was succeeded by a new Wesleyan Chapel on Wells Road and Chantry Drive (SE 1173 4752) in 1869 (source, with architect's illustration). They left in 1969, moving into what had been their Assembly Hall, directly across Chantry Drive. The building barely survived a fire in 1974 (news report). This was their base until 1985, when they moved again, joining with the U.R.C. Church - see Christchurch above. It was subsequently converted to residential use, and it was seen by Streetview in 2024. SE 1173 4748. The 1869 church was demolished, and flats built on the site - 2024 Streetview. There used to be a Primitive Methodist Chapel on Leeds Road. Its site is now a small car park. SE 1192 4792. © David Regan (2025). Sacerd Heart of Jesus (R.C.). on Stockeld Road. SE 1122 4797. © David Regan (2025). Link is a good history, and dates it to 1879, with much alteration exactly a century later. St. John the Evangelist on Bolling Road. SE 1324 4761. © David Regan (2025). Link. St. Margaret on Queens Road. SE 1149 4725. © David Regan (2025). Link. Grade II* listed, wherein it's dated to 1878-9.
