The Churches of Britain and Ireland

Alloa, Clackmannanshire

Alloa on Wikipedia.

Alloa Baptist Church on Ludgate, as seen by Streetview in 2023. It has a date-stone for 1881. A 2021 Streetview shows the Baptist Church, and to the left, St. Andrew. NS 8832 9323. Link.

Alloa Ludgate Church of Scotland (2023 Streetview) on Bedford Place and Ludgate. The church history page on the church website says it replaced a "much simpler 18th century building" - which shows as a United Secession Church on a map of 1825. Older O.S. maps show it as United Presbyterian. POWIS has a useful potted history. Its category C listing dates the current building to 1863. NS 8837 9268.

A Baptist Church used to stand on the north side of East Vennel at NS 8877 9275. Shown on a map of 1861-2, it was presumably surplus to requirements when the above Alloa Baptist opened in 1881. This source says "The Baptist Church purchased the Episcopal Church in East Vennel in 1847 before moving to its present location in 1881". Its site (the car park) was seen by Streetview in 2016.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Grange Road, as seen by Streetview in 2015. NT 8786 9306. Link.

The site (2018 Streetview) of the demolished East Free Church on what was Back O'Dykes, now a service area for the surrounding shops. So named on a map of 1862, on one of 1825 it's named as Original Burgher. It's last appearance on available maps was in 1941, when it was un-named. NS 8880 9293.

The Elim Pentecostal Church (2023 Streetview) on Greenside has a date-stone (2023 Streetview) for Greenside Mission Chapel 1873. Category C listed, wherein it says that it was originally for the Y.M.C.A., with services continuing until 1949. NS 8873 9264.

Grace Baptist Church meets at the Alloa Business Centre (2015 Streetview) on Whins Road. NS 8933 9351. Link1. Link2.

Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses (2015 Streetview) on Cowden Park. Another Streetview, from 2023. NS 8780 9318.

A map of 1900 shows a Mission Room on Craigward Place (now Craigward) at NS 8799 9252. It had been demolished by the mid-20th century, and its site remained undeveloped in 2009 (Streetview).

Another now-demolished Mission Room stood on the east side of Park Lane at NS 8827 9235. Even Park Lane is no more, built over by a bottle factory. In a Streetview from 2015, Park Lane would have run directly away from the camera - the Mission room was on its left, about 50 yards away.

Moncrieff United Free Church (2023 Streetview) on the north side of Drysdale Street was originally United Presbyterian. It's dated in its Category C listing to 1850. A newspaper report from 2023 discussed its intended closure, and another site discusses its intended sale by auction in mid-2024. Canmore (lots of photos, including interiors). A history of the church. POWIS mentions a predecessor of 1792 on the same site, and a yet earlier one elsewhere at Gourney Bridge - but I haven't been able to locate this place. NS 8860 9296.

Google lists the local Mosque as Musalla as Salaam at 97 Whins Road. It doesn't seem to have a web presence, but is presumably connected with "Spice Fusion" seen by Streetview in 2023. NS 8933 6934.

Sunnyside Road used to be home to New Church. This is the Swedenborgian (or New Jerusalem) Church mentioned here, where documents pertaining to it are dated from 1855-1901. If correct this implies an earlier church on a different site, as maps from the mid-1860's don't show a church here. The Sunnyside Road church had been built by 1901, and it was still marked as a place of worship on a map of 1957. Demolished at some point, a house now occupies its site (2021 Streetview). NS 8880 9328. Howard Richter has advised of an article here (not working when I tried it), dating the church to 1877, sold in 1902, and that it was later a Gospel Hall. NS 8880 9328.

The former St. Andrew (2023 Streetview) stands between Mar Place and Ludgate, and is now the base for a charity (link). Its category B listing dates it to 1882 and says it was later known as Alloa North Church. NS 8836 9321.

St. John (Episcopal) used to stand on Clackmannan Road. It's labelled as St. John's Chapel (Episcopal) on a map of the mid-1860's - later maps show it as R.C. Chapel (St. Mungo) to whom it was sold in 1869. When it was demolished in the latter half of the last century the road was realigned, so the frontage of the building will have been on today's road - a 2023 Streetview shows where it stood. NS 8905 9297. When the Episcopals left in 1869 they moved into the newly built St. John the Evangelist (2023 Streetview) on Broad Street at NS 8856 9256. Link, and history page. Category B listed. Canmore has lots of photos, including the interior.

For the first St. Mungo (R.C.) - see St. John, above. The present St. Mungo was built in 1959, according to its category C listing, consecrated in 1961 (source), and it was seen by Streetview in 2023. NS 8859 9287. Link.

There are remains of the Old Parish Kirk (St. Mungo) on Kirkgate, seen by Streetview in 2016. Consisting of the tower and part of the west wall, it's category B listed, wherein it's dated to a re-modelling in 1680-3 of earlier fabric. For related listed features, including a mausoleum in the old churchyard, see here.

The present St. Mungo (2023 Streetview) is on Bedford Place at NS 8835 9266. Link, with a good history here. Category B listed - dates it to 1817-19.

Tabernacle Independent Chapel used to stand on New Entry at NS 8880 9268. It pre-dated Wood's map of 1825, and doesn't seem to have been active at the turn of the 20th century. In this 2021 Streetview it would have stood behind the yellow car, back to the circular feature, and partly across the road to the right.

The former West Free Church stands on Bank Street and Burgh Mews at NS 8861 9272. It closed in 1970, and is now a cinema. Three Streetviews from 2019 - 1, 2, 3. History here. Its brief category B listing (where it's called Chalmers United Free Church of Scotland) dates it to 1855-6.
